Who impressed most last weekend across Europe’s top five leagues to make our best XI?
In a 4-4-2 formation, it is time to find out…
The Clarets’ goalkeeper was the reason they escaped Brighton with a point following a 1-1 draw on Saturday. His 10 saves set a new single-game Premier League record for the season and so good were some of those interventions that he admitted he sat in the tunnel watching them back on his phone afterwards!
There were several standouts in Spurs’ sensational return to form against Newcastle but the former Sporting CP man was arguably the standout. He’s enjoying an excellent season that has perhaps flown a little under the radar, and was involved in much of Tottenham’s best attacking moves on Sunday, including his part in Richarlison’s second goal.
A central defender’s job may be keeping goals out rather than scoring them but when you net twice (in the space of two minutes no less) to fire your side to a 3-2 victory then you cannot be ignored for inclusion.
Following their astonishing late collapse at Cagliari just before Halloween, Frosinone have looked more assured defensively recently. Romagnoli was the pick of the bunch over the weekend in a scoreless stalemate with Torino: their first clean sheet for 13 games.
He may be deployed in more of a wing-back role by Simone Inzaghi but we had to find a way to get him into this side as he found the net once more in the Nerazzurri’s routine win over Udinese, taking his goals tally for the campaign to three in addition to four assists.
Again, we’re forced to get a little creative. The Frankfurt winger may have played on the left during his side’s stunning 5-1 win over Bayern Munich in which he netted twice but there was no way he could be left out here after that scintillating showing.
A goal, an assist and a Man of the Match award to go with it all from Real Sociedad’s star midfielder saw them pick up a big morale-boosting 3-0 win at Villarreal ahead of their Champions League clash on Tuesday which will have top spot in the group up for grabs.
There were so many contenders from Bournemouth’s stunning 3-0 win at Old Trafford. Ryan Christie was his usual inexhaustible self, Marcus Tavernier was a constant nuisance and Dominic Solanke ran himself into the ground but at the heart of action, Cook did everything – working as impeccably off the ball as he did when in possession with a standout performance.
The reason Ebimbe had to be shifted to the right was the inclusion of the South Korean, who was involved in three of Spurs’ four goals against Newcastle. He contributed two assists, tormented Kieran Trippier from start to finish and also netted to take his tally to double figures for the eighth straight season.
What a rise in form the veteran forward is enjoying of late. Over his last four games for Marseille, he has contributed seven goals and three assists and was the star man again last time out, scoring two and setting up another in the 4-2 win at Lorient. Nobody in Ligue 1 has assisted more goals this season.
And joining Aubameyang in attack is his former Arsenal strike partner, with Lyon closing the gap at the bottom of the table with a much-needed 3-0 win over Toulouse, a game in which Lacazette scored all of the goals to leave with the match ball.
