And now, the end is near, and so I face, the final curtain…

We’re closing in on the end of the European domestic season, league titles are being decided, cups are being won and the tussle for places in our Power Rankings is more intense than ever.

10. Tottenham Hotspur (new entrant)

Spurs weren’t great in their 1-0 win over Newcastle in mid-week but Chelsea only managing a draw elsewhere means the Lilywhites can rest easy in the knowledge they will be playing Champions League football at their new stadium next season. Even without silverware, that has to be considered a successful season and as Mauricio Pochettino quite rightly said, it’s particularly impressive considering they’ve had to play a “season of away games”.

9. Valencia (new entrant)

Despite losing away to Villarreal on Saturday, Valencia’s place in next season’s Champions League was already assured earlier in the day thanks to a defeat for Real Betis. This will be the first time Los Che have featured in Europe’s premier competition since 2015 and they will join champions Barcelona, Atlético and Real Madrid in the group stage draw. Successful season, all told.

8. Schalke (new entrant)

Another team who will be returning to the Champions League next season is Schalke. Saturday’s 2-1 win over Augsburg sealed a second-placed Bundesliga finish for the Royal Blues for the first time since 2009/10. That they’ll also be finishing above bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund is an added sweetener for Domenico Tedesco’s men.

7. Atlético Madrid (Last week: 8)

Real Madrid’s defeat Sevilla on Wednesday means Diego Simeone’s side still look a safe bet to finish runners up in La Liga, despite losing to Espanyol at the weekend. Still, it’s all about the Europa League now, and that ‘hands off Antoine Griezmann’ statement levelled at Barcelona on Tuesday might just have been the bravest power play of the week.

6. Porto (New entrant)

A goalless draw between Sporting and Benfica on Saturday evening meant Porto were crowned champions of Portugal for the first time since 2013 and finally broke Benfica’s four-title winning streak. Sérgio Conceição is proving to be one of the best up-and-coming coaches in Europe and has been rewarded for lifting the first silverware of his managerial career by being linked with a summer switch to Everton. We’d suggest he’s probably better off staying where he is, for the time being at least.

5. Bayern Munich (Last week: 4)

Bayern did what Bayern do again at the weekend when they won 3-1 away at Cologne, taking the Bundesliga champions’ league at the top of the table to a healthy 24 points. Put it this way, Bayern are so good domestically that some of their supporters and former players have this week criticised Robert Lewandowski – who has scored 40 goals this season – for being wasteful in front of goal.

4. Paris Saint-Germain (Last week: 7)

Tuesday’s Coupe de France final victory over third division Les Herbiers sealed a domestic treble for PSG and their third consecutive domestic cup double. Allowing Les Herbiers captain Sebastien Flochon to lift the trophy with Thiago Silva was a nice touch too.

3. Barcelona (Last week: 1)

Wednesday’s emphatic win over Villarreal means Barça now just need to avoid defeat in their final two games (against Levante and Real Sociedad) to finish the season unbeaten. Their elimination from the Champions League may have been a huge disappointment, but Ernesto Valverde’s first season at Camp Nou really hasn’t been bad at all. And despite what Atlético said in that statement, it seems nailed on the Blaugrana will be bolstering their already scary attacking ranks with the signing of a certain French forward this summer.

2. Manchester City (Last week: 2)

The debate over who should be considered the all-time great Premier League team is no closer to being settled, but Manchester City have now undoubtedly had the best ever Premier League season. Wednesday’s victory over Brighton saw them set new records for goals scored (105), points gained (97), Premier League wins in a season (31) and Premier League home wins in season (19). Win again at Southampton on Sunday and they’ll also set a new record for most away wins in a season (16). Those people who said Pep Guardiola couldn’t handle English football have gone very quiet all of a sudden.

1. Juventus (Last week: 5)

The Bianconeri are Serie A champions again in all but name and on Wednesday, they sealed a domestic double by thrashing AC Milan in the final of the Coppa Italia. That makes it seven titles in a row, and three consecutive Coppas. Their monopoly on Italian silverware might be frustrating for some, but you simply have to admire that kind of ruthless efficiency.
