Huddersfield Town are reportedly fielding fresh interest from Leeds United in star midfield man, Lewis O’Brien.

Leeds are desperate to add a midfielder to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League season to ease the burden on the likes of Mateusz Klich, Stuart Dallas and the returning Adam Forshaw.

As per a report from Football Insider, their focus is now on O’Brien at Huddersfield, with claims that early talks have been held over the possibility of the 22-year-old moving to Elland Road.

Things appear to be at a very early stage, but there’s a long way to go in this summer transfer window and the expectancy amongst Town fans is that at some point the club would be fielding significant interest in O’Brien.

Should things materialise and O’Brien end up at Elland Road, there will be a lasting impact at Huddersfield. As with any transfer, there will be winners and losers, which we take a look at here:

Winner: Scott High

O’Brien’s current deal with Huddersfield is running down, but that’s not the case with High, who signed up long-term earlier in the summer.

The 20-year-old managed 14 appearances in the Championship last season, with only one of those starts. However, in the event of O’Brien moving on, you’d imagine that his role in Carlos Corberan’s side would become more important.

That’s not a bad thing. When you think of O’Brien’s trajectory, he was once in High’s shoes and excelled when thrown in at the deep end.

High has had a positive pre-season, backing up the impact he had towards the end of the 2021/22 season. In time, Huddersfield will want to give him a platform to grow.

Ideally, it wouldn’t come on the back of losing O’Brien to Leeds. There has, though, been indications already that High is ready to take on that added responsibility in the Huddersfield first-team.

It’s a big ask, but he could step up should O’Brien move on.

Loser: Carlos Corberan

It’s not been easy for Corberan stepping up into management in the Championship. Huddersfield flirted with relegation during the second-half of last season and the Spaniard needs a positive start to 2021/22 to convince fans that he’s the right man to lead the club forwards.

Simply, selling one of his best players, who undoubtedly buys into his philosophy, would be a major kick in the teeth.

O’Brien has his price and denying him the chance to move into the Premier League is difficult, but it would leave Corberan’s already difficult job significantly tougher.

There would be little grumbling and Corberan would look for solutions either in the transfer window or in his own squad (High). Yet, robbing him of O’Brien’s service would leave a big hole to fill.

It really wouldn’t be ideal for the already under pressure Spaniard.
