It had emerged that Luton Town had won the race for exciting midfielder Elliot Thorpe, who turned down a contract at Tottenham this summer, as reported by Wales Online.

Confirming that he has been training with The Hatters recently, Nathan Jones spoke about the highly-rated midfielder during his pre-Bournemouth press conference yesterday afternoon.

It appears that Luton have fought off plenty of competition for the 20-year-old, with Leicester City, Burnley, and Brentford all said to be missing out, as per Wales Online’s report.

Thorpe featured 18 times for Tottenham’s U23s last time out, scoring twice in the process.

The young midfielder also appears to be a versatile option for Luton, should they secure his services, playing as a holding midfielder, box-to-box operator, a number 10, and as a right-winger during the club’s Premier League 2 campaign last year.

Here, we take a look at one winner and one loser as Luton edge closer to signing Elliot Thorpe…

One winner – Nathan Jones

This will be a real coup for Nathan Jones’ side, with Wales Online stating that Nathan Jones has been a big influence in the youngster’s decision-making.

Jones has been dealt several setbacks with injuries this season, to the extent that he said yesterday that he has been “fearful to train,” in an interview with Luton Today.

Not only will Luton welcome the technical ability, tenacity, and energy that Thorpe will bring, but they will also appreciate having an extra body available for selection.

Thorpe is a player, should Luton complete a deal for him, that can grow with the club, and his signature will be another step in their progression.

One loser – Allan Campbell

Allan Campbell is one of a few players that is sidelined at the moment, suffering ligament damage against Blackburn Rovers earlier in the month.

The good news for Luton fans is that he was pictured back in training this morning, and whilst he may spend a while getting back to full fitness, the fact that he is back out on the grass will come as a great boost.

However, Thorpe will be a direct competitor for that midfield position, and if he can put pen-to-paper soon, then he is likely to have an opportunity before Campbell returns.

Should he take it and shine, then Campbell will have to work extremely hard for another chance to get back involved in the starting XI.
