Phil Costa·22 November 2019
The Premier League is stacked with stars who shine on a weekly basis.
But which players don’t get enough credit for their efforts?
Here’s one under-the-radar sensation from each club that deserves more love …
Mattéo Guendouzi
Others take the limelight and rightly so, but Mattéo Guendouzi is quickly becoming a key figure for Arsenal.
He brings so much personality to the pitch alongside his impressive technique and vision – essentially making him undroppable.
Frédéric Guilbert
The transition from Ligue 1 to Premier League football can be unforgiving. Not for Frédéric Guilbert.
He already looks a natural at Villa Park with his tenacity and reading of the game already standing out.
Philip Billing
A summer signing that went under the radar, but Philip Billing has been brilliant for Bournemouth this season.
The 6ft 4in midfielder is currently averaging 10 interceptions and tackles per 90, three clear of Wilfried Ndidi (7.2 per 90) in second place.
Adam Webster
There’s ball playing centre backs and then there’s Adam Webster.
The 24-year-old is so comfortable on the ball and his marauding runs through midfield are brilliant to watch. £20m well spent.
Dwight McNeil
There’s plenty of young English talent coming through right now and Dwight McNeil is no different.
His style is reminiscent of an old fashioned winger – stay wide, take on your man, cross it in. And Burnley are better for it.
Jorginho
We’re going there. Jorginho was unfairly scapegoated during his debut season and people are beginning to see the light.
Started every Premier League game this season and his metronomic quality provides a base for the youngsters to shine.
Jordan Ayew
Weaker sides in the top flight will always need players like Jordan Ayew.
He won’t challenge for the golden boot but his work rate is immaculate, and he’ll always pop up with a huge goal.
Alex Iwobi
Does your frontline need a silky, technical link-man to glue everything together? Alex Iwobi is your guy.
He has a knack of finding space in dangerous areas and can execute defence splitting passes. Just don’t ask him to score goals.
Ricardo Pereira
Has Brendan Rodgers’ attacking style benefitted anybody more than Ricardo Pereira?
Afforded license to bomb forward, he eats up ground and even has an eye for goal, scoring twice already this term.
Joël Matip
After taking a while to settle at Anfield, Joël Matip has been superb alongside Virgil van Dijk.
Calm, confident in the air and decent in possession – he hasn’t lost a Premier League game in his last 36 appearances.
Oleksandr Zinchenko
Having originally joined Manchester City as an attacking midfielder, Oleksandr Zinchenko has played a big part at left-back.
Pep Guardiola trusts him enough to dictate play from wide areas and he’s rarely disappointed defensively.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
This wasn’t easy. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has, however, been a shining light for Manchester United.
He has a unique ability to lockdown his whole flank and his tackling numbers continue to amaze.
Fabian Schär
Can you really be considered ‘underrated’ if you’re on the club’s best players?
In this case, absolutely. Fabian Schär would look comfortable in a Champions League side.
Emiliano Buendía
We’re calling it now. In two seasons Emi Buendía will be playing for a top six club.
His dribbling numbers are great, he contributes defensively and there’s even end product with four assists this season. Player.
Jack O’Connell
Sheffield United have been a breath of fresh air under Chris Wilder.
Defensively, they’re brilliant, but Jack O’Connell has stood out to us – particularly in games against Chelsea and Arsenal.
Oriol Romeu
Consistency is arguably the most important trait for a footballer and Oriol Romeu is exactly that.
Rarely hits those 9/10 performances but will never drop a 3/10. Always a steady seven and you cannot fault him.
Harry Winks
They’ve had a horrible season, but Tottenham are undoubtedly a better team with Harry Winks in midfield.
He keeps things ticking and provides structure to a side who have so often lacked it.
Etienne Capoue
Life hasn’t been easy for Watford this season but they are extremely bright in areas – namely central midfield.
Abdoulaye Doucouré is brilliant but Etienne Capoue takes our pick. Smooth, intelligent and dominant on his day.
Manuel Lanzini
His influence has waned slightly due to injury, but Manuel Lanzini is still brilliant on his day.
The Argentine nips in and out of space, links play well and provides balance alongside Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko.
João Moutinho
Wolves have enjoyed a rapid rise in English football and João Moutinho has been central to that.
He’s the typical experienced player, letting his brain dictate things while the young bucks run around him.
