Jürgen Klopp hopes Nottingham Forest supporters learned a lesson after taunting Darwin Núñez.
Liverpool were indebted to Núñez, who came off the bench and netted a 98th-minute winner at the City Ground, which maintained their leadership of the Premier League for at least another week.
Although shrouded in controversy, his effort is Liverpool’s latest winning goal in a Premier League game since the 2006-07 season. It was also the 18th last-minute winner in the Premier League under Klopp, more than any other team since the German took charge.
As soon as entering the field, Núñez was serenaded by “You’re just a s*** Andy Carroll” chants by the home faithful, much to their detriment, as Klopp pointed out in his post-match comments.
“I would not sing a song like that. I would try not to wind Darwin up,” he said. “The goal was super deserved for him. They can sing it when Darwin responds like that.”
His compatriot Luis Suarez, who netted 82 goals across 133 appearances for the Anfield side, couldn’t hide his delight for his former club and international teammate.
“Yes, I saw (the goal). I am so happy for Liverpool, and I am so happy for Darwin. He is one of the best strikers in the world today.”
For much as he’s maligned, Núñez has been unlucky when it comes to striking the woodwork on numerous occassion, and he’s underperforming his xG but the Uruguyan marksman has now scored more Premier League goals for Liverpool this season (10) than he managed in the entirety of last season (9).
He’s also been directly involved in nine goals in his last nine appearances in all competitions for Liverpool (six goals and three assists), netting in each of his last three.
Klopp earlier this season even talked about Núñez’s scary potential. “I’m a bit afraid of the highs he could reach because there is so much there; it’s crazy.”
