The recent clash between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was marred by a troubling incident that forced a temporary halt to the game.

Referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer suspended the match for 16 minutes after objects were thrown into the Real Madrid penalty area from the south end of the stadium. These actions disrupted the flow of the game, but more concerning was the report of potential violence.

Now, according to recent reports from El Chiringuito TV, one of the fans responsible for throwing a lighter at Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, was also in possession of a knife.

Such revelations raised significant concerns about safety at the stadium. In response, Atletico Madrid issued a statement affirming that their security team is working closely with the police to identify those responsible.

According to the club, at least one individual involved in the incident has already been identified.

Police are equally involved

The outlet mentions that inspector Jose Luis Tucho, a police officer involved in overseeing the match, provided further details on the situation during an interview.

He explained that the day had been challenging, with multiple factors complicating the event. The possibility of suspending the match was seriously considered, as the situation escalated.

“Today has been a very complicated day, everything has come together and in the end, there was a threat of suspension by the referee.”

However, a meeting between all parties involved—players, coaching staff, and the referee—resulted in an agreement to continue the game after addressing the crowd.

“All the parties involved, coaching staff, players, the referee and I, met in the referee’s changing room.

“In the end, I told the referee that if he spoke to the cheering crowd and they listened to reason, we could continue. He said yes and that’s what happened,” he added.

The inspector also confirmed that “there are people identified and some expelled” due to their involvement in throwing objects at Courtois. While the focus is on maintaining order and safety, the situation could lead to further investigations by the relevant authorities.

Inspector Tucho suggested that some of those expelled “were carrying some objects, but that will be a matter for the commission” in charge of such matters.

The incident has raised significant concerns about fan behaviour and stadium safety, with further actions likely to be taken in response to these dangerous events.

The inspector was asked if the fans were carrying a weapon, to which he replied, “Maybe”.
