‘One of the best I ever trained’ – Pep Guardiola heaps praise on Rico Lewis after impressive display against Leipzig | OneFootball

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola showered praise on teenager Rico Lewis following his impressive display in the 3-1 win over RB Leipzig.

The 18-year-old assisted Phil Foden’s opening goal, but it was cancelled out by Lois Openda’s equaliser minutes into the second half.

However, goals from Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku in the final phase of the game ensured the reigning champions three points.

Lewis was one of the standout performers, registering his first assist this season after carrying on his excellent form from the treble-winning campaign last term.

Playing as an advanced midfielder, the English teenager was a constant threat between the lines, showcasing his top-notch playmaking skills.

He put in a good shift defensively, making quick recoveries and also winning a lot of duels and tackles.

Lewis was rewarded with a new deal a few months ago, and he continues to repay the faith by delivering sensational performances.

Guardiola singled out Lewis after the game, lauding him as the best player he has ever coached in his managerial career.

“What a player – what a player,” the Spaniard told the press. “18 years old. I have been a manager for 14, 15 years training unbelievable players.

“To find a player like him playing in the pockets, how he has to move in holding midfield, full-back coming inside moving in the spaces – he is one of the best I ever trained by far.”

Lewis has seen his game time notably reduced this season, but Guardiola promised that the English prodigy will play a pivotal role moving forward.

“He is a humble guy, doesn’t talk much, but has the appreciation of all his mates,” Guardiola added.

“He didn’t play much this season – last season he was a key point and helped us understand what we should do in our build-up. Today was proof again.

“This season he hasn’t played as much, but he is going to play a lot.”

Guardiola has hardly ever praised players even though they are top-class performers, which speaks volumes about Lewis’ talent.

Julian Alvarez was the player who turned the game on its head, scoring a sensational curler to restore the lead before setting up Doku’s strike.

The Argentine World Cup winner has grown into a more pivotal figure than last season, netting six goals and five assists in 12 games.

Following the shock defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Guardiola will be relieved to see his side return to winning ways.
