Whilst Dave Jones' near two-year spell as Sheffield Wednesday boss wasn't particularly successful, one of his final acts as Owls' boss ensured he left a lasting legacy at Hillsborough.

After a poor start to the 2013/14 Championship season, where the club had won just one league game and were second bottom of the league, the decision was made to relieve Jones of his duties after 20 months at the club in December 2013.

However, just prior to leaving the club, Jones invited Dutch international defender Glenn Loovens to the club to train after he'd left Real Zaragoza, with the view of earning a deal afterwards.

It's fair to say Loovens impressed, and he earned a short-term deal at the club to the end of the 2013/14 season, which was subsequently extended, and he spent four-and-a-half years with the Owls in total.

It was a shrewd piece of business from Jones, with Loovens being vastly experienced, and it proved an excellent move for all parties.

Glenn Loovens' time at Sheffield Wednesday

Glenn Loovens joined a Sheffield Wednesday side that looked almost nailed on to be relegated, having won just one league game all season.

However, he made the perfect start to life at Hillsborough, and he played 89 minutes in a 2-1 win over eventual champions Leicester City on the same day that he signed, which gave the club a huge confidence boost.

When fit and available Loovens was a regular starter for the Owls, and he even wore the captain's armband on a number of occasions during the 2013/14 season, helping the club avoid relegation and finish in a comfortable 16th place.

The former Celtic man signed a contract extension that summer, and was also handed the captain's armband, showing the impact he made in such a small period of time.

He made a bright start to the 2014/15 season, but an injury kept him out for a large portion of the second-half of the season, but it was a season of improvement from the Owls as they finished 13th.

The following season almost saw Loovens lead the Owls to the Premier League under Carlos Carvalhal, but they fell just short losing the play-off final to Hull City, but he continued to show why he was so well thought of at Hillsborough with a number of impressive performances.

It was more of the same during the 2016/17 season, and despite suffering from injuries, Loovens continued to lead the Owls, but yet again they fell short of promotion after losing in the play-off semi-finals.

Injuries really began to catch up with the two-cap Dutch international during the 2017/18 season, and he managed just 20 league appearances, with his final game for the club coming on the final day of the season in a 5-1 win over Norwich.

He was released that summer, but after 150 appearances for the club he went down as a modern-day Sheffield Wednesday cult hero.

Glenn Loovens' career after leaving Sheffield Wednesday

After being released by Sheffield Wednesday, Glenn Loovens joined Sunderland after they had been relegated to League One following consecutive relegations from the Premier League.

Despite signing a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light, Loovens was unable to see out both years of his contract and after just one season he retired after making just 13 appearances in all competitons for the Black Cats.

Injuries got the better of Loovens towards the end of his career, but he'll always be fondly remembered by the Wednesday faithful for his performances and leadership qualities.

When he joined the Owls in December 2013, they were a club on the brink of relegation but with Loovens leading the side he very nearly helped them win promotion just two-and-a-half years later.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters should thank Dave Jones for his role in bringing him to the club - he delievered a modern-day Owls icon.
