Manchester City and Bayern Munich both have players at risk of suspension when the two teams meet in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Premier League champions face the serial Bundesliga winners on Tuesday with a Champions League semi-final against Chelsea or Real Madrid at stake.
Manchester City, who are bidding to win the competition for the first time, will be looking to reach the final four of the Champions League for a third successive season with victory over Bayern Munich.
The German side recently appointed Thomas Tuchel as manager after sacking Julian Nagelsmann during the March international break.
City manager Pep Guardiola spent three years at the Allianz Arena between 2013 and 2016 prior to his arrival at the Etihad Stadium.
The Blues haven’t played Bayern Munich competitively since 2014 when the two teams met in the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Former Manchester City forward Leroy Sane and on-loan full-back Joao Cancelo could both face their former club in midweek, with the latter having moved to Germany during the January transfer window for the remainder of the campaign following a reported training ground bust-up.
City host Bayern Munich in the first-leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening before the second-leg next Wednesday in Munich.
Three players are at risk of missing the second-leg next week should they pick up a yellow card during the first-leg on Tuesday evening.
UEFA rules state: “From the first match in the group stage, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, which did not result in a red card, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc).”
Manchester City have one player at risk of suspension while Bayern Munich have two players.
Manuel Akanji would miss the second-leg for Manchester City should the central defender pick up a booking on Tuesday night.
Both defender Noussair Mazraoui and midfielder Joshua Kimmich are one booking away from suspension for Bayern Munich ahead of Tuesday’s first-leg clash.
Yellow cards expire upon the completion of the quarter-finals, so a player cautioned in both legs of a semi-final tie cannot be suspended for the final.
