Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi and his agent have delivered a series of updates about the player’s future at the club, with a number of outlets reporting on the comments.
To begin with, Diario AS reported that Otamendi’s agent, Martin Sendoa, had stated his client’s wish was to fulfil the remainder of his contract with City prior to finishing his career in Argentina with River Plate.
Otamendi’s contract runs until June 2022. Goal afterwards relayed TyCSports coverage of Sendoa’s comments that Otamendi is ‘dying to’ sign for River Plate.
‘If River calls him and convinces him, in June it could happen…Nicolas is not going to make the offer, he has to get the call from [River Plate manager, Marcelo] Gallardo. One call would change anything,’ Sendoa is alleged to have remarked.
This claim therefore opened up the prospect of Otamendi departing this summer, should River Plate instigate a move for the Argentina international.
However, the Manchester Evening News then reported quotes from Otamendi himself covered by DiarioOle, where the centre back expressed his wish to remain at City for the remainder of his contract.
‘I have two years of my contract at Manchester City and my head is set here, to fulfil it. My family, my children are happy. Then it will be seen,’ said Otamendi.
The comments from the defender seem to diminish the prospect of Otamendi leaving this summer as part of a much mooted squad reshuffle. Although, it could merely be a negotiating ploy to ensure he receives a healthy pay-off should City try and sell him prior to his contract’s expiry.
