André Onana is set to start his first league match for Ajax this season after the Dutch side lost two keepers to injury in Portugal.

Reserve goalkeeper Jay Gorter injured his thumb early in the warm-up against Benfica before Remko Pasveer hurt his hand too.

“It was the last ball of the warm-up,” the 38-year-old told the Ajax website. “The ball hit my finger, it happens often. Then it’s just a matter of taping it and playing.”

“It was only after the game and late at night in the hotel that the pain increased and my finger had also become a lot thicker.

“I am very disappointed because we’re in a good run of form of form with a lot of important matches coming up in a short period.”

First choice keeper Maarten Stekelenburg is out until the end of the season following a hip operation, meaning Onana will come into the starting lineup for the first time since returning from AFCON.
