Liverpool fans won’t thank us for reminding them, but it’s been exactly six years since Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea.
A fortnight previously, the Reds had beaten title rivals Manchester City and in a huddle with his team-mates after the final whistle, captain Gerrard was captured uttering the famous last words.
“This does not fucking slip now,” he said.
On 27 April 2014, Gerrard’s words came back to haunt him.
José Mourinho’s Chelsea were the visitors to Anfield and in first half stoppage time, the former England midfielder slipped while trying to turn in the middle of the pitch, allowing Demba Ba to run through and score the game’s opening goal.
The Blues went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to a bus-parking masterclass from Mourinho, and Man City were crowned champions on the final day of the season.
He said “This does not fucking slip” and then he slipped.
The irony.
