8 May 2018 marks 19 years to the day since one of the most dramatic last-gasp goals in the history of the English Football League.
On the final day of the 1998/99 season, Carlisle United were staring down the barrel of relegation to the Conference when they welcomed Plymouth Argyle to Brunton Park.
Only a win would save the Cumbrians from dropping out of the Football League but as the clock ticked over into injury time, the score was level at 1-1.
But in the 95th minute they were awarded a corner and up came Jimmy Glass – an until then virtually unknown goalkeeper signed on loan from Swindon Town.
What happened next has gone down in English football folklore …
Glass blasted the ball home on the half-volley, Carlisle won 2-1, and thousands of jubilant home supporters flooded onto the pitch in celebration.
That goal may have made him a household name and an instant Carlisle legend, but he only actually made three appearances for the club before leaving to join Cambridge United.
After plying his trade at a number of other lower league clubs, Glass hung up his gloves in 2004 and when The Independent tracked him down on the 10th anniversary of his goal in 2009, he was working as a taxi driver in a small town in Dorset.
