On This Day: Celtic’s stunning win over Spartak Moscow

Article image:On This Day: Celtic’s stunning win over Spartak Moscow

On This Day in 2012, Neil Lennon’s Celtic produced a stunning performance to beat Spartak Moscow in Russia. The Irishman would watch on as his team would come from 2-1 down to seal their first group stage win away from home in European football.

Georgios Samaras scored a late winner to send those that made the long trip over to Russia something to celebrate.

Celtic opened the scoring through Gary Hooper after just 12 minutes and it looked as if they would hold on until the break before Emenike pulled one back with 41 mins on the clock. As Celtic often do, they conceded in quick succession as Emenike scored after 48 mins. James Forrest made it 2-2 after 71 minutes and it looked to be a case of Celtic hanging onto a point. Although, Samaras popped up in the 89th minute to seal the three points.

Aiden McGeady started for Unai Emery’s Spartak but he could do nothing to help Celtic recording an impressive away win.
