On This Day in 2016, Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic picked up their first trophy of the Invincibles season with a win over Aberdeen. Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen side set out to frustrate the Scottish Champions from the outset and it took a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock.

Tom Rogic cut onto his favoured left foot before drilling a shot into the net to beat Joe Lewis. The Australian was then involved in the second goal as he played the ball through to James Forrest, who showed his class by driving at the Aberdeen defence and finding the same corner as Rogic. The goalscoring duo combined again as Rogic’s deft pass into Forrest’s path resulted in Forrest being fouled and John Beaton pointing to the spot. Moussa Dembele stepped up and completed the scoring from the spot.

It would be Celtic’s 100th Trophy but it would be the first of the twelve won in the Quadruple Treble. The League Cup will return in January as Celtic again face Derek McInnes but this time the ex-Rangers midfielder will be managing Kilmarnock. The winners will then play the winners of Rangers v Aberdeen.
