On This Day: Celtic beat Real Betis, our last win in Europe

On This Day in 2021, Celtic beat Real Betis in the UEFA Europa League. Ange Postecoglou’s side had played well in the games against Betis and Leverkusen but results hadn’t followed (sound familiar?) and the team were already confirmed as through to the Conference League thanks to wins over Ferencvaros.

Stephen Welsh scored the opener from a David Turnbull header. The Academy product was up to head in an effort after just three minutes. The game remained 1-0 for the next 65 minutes with the game ebbing and flowing. A Scott Bain OG restored parity with the goalkeeper very unlucky. Celtic went up the park and scored after good work from Mikey Johnston, who drove the ball into the path of Ewan Henderson, to make it 2-1. Unfortunately, Betis responded in kind and went straight back into attack mode and Manuel Pellegrini’s side were back level in a minute. The topsy turvy result saw David Turnbull score from the spot, making it four goals in ten minutes.

It was Celtic’s last win in Europe, something that can be remedied next week as the Scottish Champions face Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League. When Brendan Rodgers returned to the club to replace Postecoglou, the Irishman said that making the team a force in Europe was his overall objective. So far this year, Celtic have shown glimpses of improvement but there has been a lack of quality to turn performances into results.
