Dan Burke·6 March 2020
Friday 6 March 2020 marks exactly 16 years since Lionel Messi made his debut for Barcelona’s B team.
The shaggy haired 16-year-old put in a mesmerising performance for Barça’s local rivals Espanyol and those who were at the match could never have known they were witnessing a piece of history.
Messi made his first-team debut the following October (coincidentally also against Espanyol) and was at the time the youngest ever player to represent Barça in an official match at 17 years, three months and 22 days old.
He scored his first senior goal against Albacete in May 2005, making him the club’s youngest ever goalscorer at the time.
Sixteen years later and his record currently stands at 626 goals in 717 games.
Not bad eh?
