The transfer of Omar Richards caused a pleasant surprise among Bayern fans last summer. It rarely happens that Bayern signs an English second division player. The 24-year-old himself was surprised that the German record champions were interested in him.
Richards moved to Bayern Munich from English second division side Reading FC on a free transfer in the summer of 2021. The left-back has been signed as a backup for Alphonso Davies. In an interview with the British “The Times”, Richards has now for the first time commented in detail about his move to Bayern Munich, revealing that he couldn’t believe his luck at first.
“My agent called me and said that Bayern Munich are observing me. They’re interested and I was like, ‘What? That can not be true.’ I almost hung up the phone. I actually didn’t believe it until I had a Zoom call with them.”
Even after his arrival in Munich, the 24-year-old needed time to realize this new experience: “I remember the first point of contact was in the big meeting room. I was sitting in there and had been early. All these people I’d seen on TV and played with on FIFA are all walking past high-fiving me”
Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich in particular left a lasting impression on the left-back: “You can’t switch off at any moment when you’re around him. He’s very clinical, he’s good at everything, really. I would play Fifa with Lewandowski and now I’m playing alongside him. It’s really crazy”
“From the first day, he [Joshua Kimmich] was really helpful to me, always checking in on me, like a big brother. He doesn’t have to do that. That’s so elite from him and, as a new person coming in, I’ll remember it for the rest of my life”
