Michael Edwards’ Summer Targets: Liverpool’s Mo Salah Replacement a Priority

Following the news that Michael Edwards would be returning to Anfield, numerous rumours regarding Liverpool’s possible summer targets have started to circulate. One of those names is Omar Marmoush, who has a narrative that has caught the eye of many Liverpool supporters.

The Eintracht Frankfurt forward has drawn a few similarities to Liverpool’s current star-man, Mohamed Salah, which we will be exploring further today. Furthermore, the Egyptian King’s precarious future at Anfield makes this discussion much more potent.

Who is Omar Marmoush?

Omar Marmoush is a 25-year-old Egyptian winger, currently playing for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. Although he may not be a familiar star to a lot of supporters, the forward has enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign in Germany.

Marmoush’s Impressive Stats

The forward already has 15 goals and seven assists to his name across all competitions. Ten of those goals have come in the Bundesliga, where Frankfurt currently sit 6th and are well in contention for a Europa Conference League spot.

Marmoush is definitely a player that Salah himself will be familiar with, as the winger has 29 caps to his name for the Egyptian National Team. Across those appearances, Marmoush has managed five goals.

Marmoush and Salah: National Team Connection

Although Liverpool supporters won’t want to be reminded, Salah currently only has one more full season on his current deal at Anfield. This makes the decision to sign a long-term replacement a pressing matter for the hierarchy at Liverpool. Michael Edwards’ arrival has only further thrown Salah’s future plans into doubt.

Typically, Edwards has been extremely hesitant to hand out new deals to players over the age of 30-years-old. Whilst, the Egyptian’s agent remains certain that Salah will see out the remainder of his current contract, who knows what will be the next step in the iconic forward’s career.

Therefore, signing a player of a similar profile to Marmoush could prove to be a smart piece of business for the Reds. Transfermarkt currently value the winger at just £15million, but it is yet to be seen whether Liverpool would eye a higher profile of replacement for the Egyptian King.

Similarities Beyond Nationality

It’s not just the winger’s nationality and position that puts him in the same boat as Salah, but also his style of play and clear eye for a goal. His direct style of play suits Liverpool’s style of play perfectly and his high standing in terms of assists is hugely similar to Salah’s play over recent years.

His high levels of progressive carries and touches in the opposition penalty area is also similar to the sort of operation that Salah carries out on a weekly basis. Marmoush looks like he could be hugely efficient in the high-press too, just by looking at the amount of interceptions, blocks and tackles per 90 minutes.

However, to be a worthy long-term candidate to replace Salah, his output in terms of non-penalty xG and shot creating actions would need to rise considerably.

Personal Perspectives and Other Potential Targets

Personally, I’m a huge fan of Johan Bakayoko of PSV, who has also been linked with a move to Anfield according to recent reports. However, Marmoush is certainly worth a shout at coming into at least be a squad player at Liverpool.

One thing that could stand in these sort of players, would be Liverpool’s next manager. For example, if Xabi Alonso was to take over at Anfield, he would operate with more of two tens rather than wingers. So, players like Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai could become pivotal players and the need for out-and-out wingers like Marmoush could become unnecessary.
