Olympic Games to be postponed until 2021

The organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have agreed to a one-year postponement of the event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Like EURO 2020, the Olympics will therefore take place in the summer of 2021.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the International Olympic Committee had agreed to the delay.

“I proposed to postpone for about a year and [IOC] president Thomas Bach responded with 100% agreement,” Abe said.

“This will make it possible for athletes to play in the best condition, and will make the event a safe and secure one for spectators.”

After his telephone talks with IOC President Bach, PM Abe spoke to the press and explained that the two have agreed that the Tokyo Olympic Games would not be cancelled, and the games will be held by the summer of 2021.

The one-year postponement would also apply to the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
