Ollie Watkins bagged a brace as Aston Villas came back from two goals down to seal an incredible 3-2 win over Everton in the Premier League today.
Watkins rallied the troops and led them back into the game. Despite a tough start to the season, he found his scoring boots to give his side all three points.
The 28-year-old had not scored before this game and recorded four big chances missed, including one gilt-edged opportunity against Arsenal.
Watkins then pulled out of England’s international break fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, but manager Unai Emery confirmed he’d be fit for the Everton visit.
With Everton leading 2-0, the Torquay-born centre-forward leapt highest to meet a Lucas Digne cross, beating Michael Keane in the air to head home just before half-time.
He fired in the equaliser with a brilliant finish after the break before substitute Jhon Duran scored a gorgeous winner.
The Colombian took the ball from outside the box and blasted in one of the goals of the season. This was his third goal from the bench this season and his seventh since the beginning of last term.
Villa are now in the top four and will hope to remain there until the end of the season, possibly securing successive seasons playing Champions League football.
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be rueing his missed chances today. He had multiple opportunities to extend the lead and even get the Toffees back into the game but faltered.
They have now lost successive games in which they had a two-goal lead. Sean Dyche’s team have shipped in 13 goals in four games and are bottom of the table.
The Toffees could be staring relegation in the eye if they continue at this pace.
