Olivier Giroud says Euro 2024 will ‘probably’ be his last international tournament with France | OneFootball

France’s record goal-scorer Olivier Giroud (37) has said that Euro 2024 will likely be the final international tournament in which he represents the national team.

Giroud is France’s record-goalscorer with 56 goals for Les Bleus in 129 appearances. He is also just 16 caps short of former France captain Hugo Lloris, who is the most-capped player in the country’s history, however, there is doubt as to whether Giroud will reach that particular landmark total.

In the wake of the Euro 2024 draw, which took place in Hamburg on Saturday, Giroud told TéléFoot that this summer’s tournament will likely be his last with the France national team. “I’m not planning beyond the short-term. The most important thing is to be fit and competitive […] these Euros are an objective,” began Giroud.

‘If we win the Euros, I’ll bow out’ – Giroud

“We nearly got it in 2016 and it is a trophy that I would love to win with France. It will maybe, probably, be my last competition, but I can’t tell you what will happen after,” said the 2018 World Cup winner.

The AC Milan forward then spoke to RMC Sport and said that should Les Bleus win the tournament in Germany, he will make his international retirement. “I’m just missing these Euros. If we win it, I’ll bow out. It will probably be the case if we don’t get to the end as well. I’m making the most of every minute. I said to some guys that if we won the 2022 World Cup, I’d retire. But I am hungry for titles with my country,” said the former Chelsea and Arsenal forward.

France have been drawn against the Netherlands and Austria in the group stages of the tournament. The third opponent is not yet known, but it will be one of Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia.
