France took the lead on the stroke of half-time in their round of 16 clash with Poland as Olivier Giroud became his nation’s all-time top goalscorer.

Having spurned a golden opportunity to give Les Blues the lead earlier in the half, diverting Ousmane Dembélé’s cross wide of the post, Giroud showed his clinical side in the 44th minute.

The 36-year-old was found in the penalty area by Kylian Mbappé and, without even looking up at the goal, planted his shot into the ground and just over the outstretched leg of the onrushing Wojciech Szczęsny in the Poland net.

Earlier in the competition, Giroud had already equalled Theirry Henry’s record of 51 goals for France. With that goal, the Milan forward becomes the greatest goalscorer in France’s history.

Giroud played a vital part in France’s 2018 World Cup winning campaign despite not scoring and is seemingly determined to leave an even greater stamp in Qatar.

Not bad for a player who didn’t make his international debut until he was 25.
