Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn believes there was really only one choice for Germany’s Footballer of the Year in 2021.

Robert Lewandowski retained the award for his remarkable feat of scoring 41 league goals last season.

In doing so, the Bayern striker broke the long-standing record of 40 that been held by fellow club legend Gerd Müller since 1972.

When the ballot was complete, the Poland international had garnered 356 of the votes, miles ahead of team-mate Thomas Müller on 41.

“What Robert Lewandowski achieved in 2020/21 is simply unbelievable,” Kahn told kicker.

“As a young guy, I heard that there was a player who set the Bundesliga record with 40 goals.

“And nobody thought that it would be possible to get anywhere near that. My whole career has been this record.”

The former Germany goalkeeper believes Lewandowski’s success is down to a combination of two factors.

“He has an incredibly good feeling for what the goalkeeper is doing,” Kahn said.

“That is for a striker extremely important. And he has a nose for being where you have to be as a striker.

“He (also) has an excellent team, which creates situations for him in which he can enforce. He knows that too.”

Lewandowski has netted an incredible 294 goals in 329 appearances since joining the Bavarians in 2014.
