TEGUCIGALPA – Honduran side Olimpia closed out their Group B campaign of the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup with a 2-0 victory against Xelaju of Guatemala on Tuesday night at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Ucles in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
With the victory, Olimpia finish in third place in the group, while Xelaju complete the tournament in fourth place, bringing an end to their respective Central American Cup campaigns.
Olimpia were continuously pelting the Xelaju goal with shots in the first half, in particular Jose Pinto being the most active.
Pinto broke through just a minute before halftime when a Xelaju miscue allowed Yustin Arboleda to steal the ball and leave it for Pinto to latch onto and score for a 1-0 Olimpia lead.
Arboleda then got to play the role of goalscorer in the early stages of the second half, taking a pass from the left and slotting home a shot to double the advantage to 2-0 in the 54’.
Despite the news trickling in from Panama that Independiente were well on their way to victory against FAS, meaning that Olimpia would not be able to finish in the top two in the group and advance, the Honduran hosts still kept their foot on the gas.
A third goal was not to be had, though, but it was a second straight win for the two-time Concacaf League winners, who closed their campaign on a winning note.
