Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reserved special praise for Scott McTominay after his brilliant display during the win over Leicester City.

The young Scotsman was tenacious in his efforts as he helped his side narrowly edge the Foxes to a 1-0 win.

Marcus Rashford netted from the penalty spot but it was McTominay’s energy and work-rate that kept his side from conceding.

United’s win was their second in the first five matches of the season and was absolutely crucial given the circumstances.

While it wasn’t pretty, it was needed and the hope is Solskjaer’s men can build a foundation on today’s performance.

McTominay’s incredible performances in pre-season saw him rise above the pecking order to overtake both Fred and Nemanja Matic.

However, should Solskjaer invest in his midfield as expected, the academy product could see himself fall back down.

The question is whether to trust in McTominay’s development or address an area on the pitch that needs investing in.

Perhaps that’s why Solskjaer was said to have targeted Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff rather than a proven midfielder as it would mean the two youngsters could battle it out rather than demote the United man right away.

Either way, if McTominay can keep up his performances then there’ll hardly be any fans complaining about the weak midfield.
