Ole Gunnar Solskjaer baffled by Ireland links as manager search continues | OneFootball

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has “no idea” where reports that he was in line to become the next Republic of Ireland manager came from.

The former Manchester United boss and player was suddenly installed as the favourite to take on the vacant role as bookmakers slashed their odds on him doing so.

But The Athletic’s Andy Mitten has poured cold water on the possibility of Solskjaer replacing Stephen Kenny after speaking with the 51-year-old.

Mitten tweeted: “He has no idea where it came from. He has complete respect for the country and did speak briefly about the job in [January], but decided it wouldn’t be right for him.”

Solskjaer is one of several potential candidates to have been linked with the job before ruling themselves out, although the FAI are expected to reveal their new manager in the next week.

The Norwegian has been out of work since being sacked by Man United in November 2021, having considered a number of offers to return to the dugout.

Solskjaer previously had two stints at Molde in his homeland and a short spell at Cardiff City, before spending three years at Old Trafford.

Having represented the Red Devils 366 times during his playing career, scoring 126 goals, he returned to the club on an initial caretaker basis to replace Jose Mourinho. He became the boss on a permanent basis following an impressive run of form.
