Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position as manager of Manchester United is now under serious threat.

The Red Devils slumped to a 5-0 defeat against bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday, a result that ranks among the worst in the club's long history.

Pretty much every United player dropped a stinker of a performance at Old Trafford and the team as a whole looked disorganised in the extreme.

Much of the blame for that lies with Solskjaer, because it's clear that he is not properly preparing the squad for matches.

But while we can criticise the Norwegian's suspect coaching methods, it's good to remember that the 48-year-old is a thoroughly decent guy and absolutely adores the club.

He was even signing autographs for United fans after the 5-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool and you simply have to applaud him for that.

Well played, Ole.

In his post-match interview, Solskjaer was keen to stress that he will carry on as United manager, despite experiencing his "darkest day" in the job.

"We know we are rock bottom, we can't feel any worse than this. Let's see where we take it," he told Sky Sports after the game.

"I have come too far, we have come too far as a group. We are too close to give up now.

"It is not easy to say something apart from it is the darkest day I have had leading these players.

"We were not good enough individually and as a team - you can't give a team like Liverpool those chances, but unfortunately we did.

"The whole performance was not good enough. We created openings, they had chances and they have been clinical. The third goal decided the game."

The match is essentially a must-win for Solskjaer, because if Nuno Espirito Santo's side achieve victory, the Red Devils' board may finally be forced into sacking him.
