Manchester United’s emphatic 7-1 aggregate demolition of Athletic Club has rekindled some late-season optimism at Old Trafford. With a Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao now firmly pencilled in, domestic priorities have shifted. Sunday’s Premier League meeting with West Ham United, though, is more about tidying up the league calendar than chasing tangible success.
It’s a curious match-up: 15th versus 17th. A clash that, on paper, lacks traditional stakes, but still hums with narrative. United must manage expectation and rotation with one eye – if not both – on Europe. West Ham, meanwhile, arrive with little more than pride and the symbolic target of 40 points to play for.
For Manchester United, the casualty list continues to shape Ruben Amorim’s options. Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined after a muscle injury sustained against Brentford. There’s a glimmer of hope that he may return before season’s end, but it won’t be this weekend. Youngsters Toby Collyer and Ayden Heaven face late fitness tests, while Lisandro Martinez (knee), Joshua Zirkzee (thigh), and Diogo Dalot (calf) are all ruled out.
Over in the West Ham camp, there’s cautious optimism around Edson Alvarez’s recovery from a back issue, though the game might come just too soon for the Mexican. Crysencio Summerville and Michail Antonio remain long-term absentees, and no major reinforcements are expected before Sunday.
The tempo and tone of this encounter may be dictated as much by what’s not at stake as what is. Amorim is unlikely to gamble with another youthful line-up like the one that leaked four goals against Brentford. But expect rotation to feature again, with senior stars managed ahead of their European showdown.
West Ham, nearly at full strength, may sense an opportunity. Graham Potter’s side have not tasted victory at Old Trafford in a league fixture for nearly twenty years, yet this game offers a rare window. The Hammers fought back well in their last outing, drawing 1-1 with Tottenham courtesy of a late strike from Jarrod Bowen. That same threat could trouble a makeshift United defence.

It’s the kind of fixture where muscle memory might take over. United, buoyed by European success but distracted, may start slow. West Ham, already thinking of summer, could exploit the lull. A draw seems fitting for a game that means little in points but still something in pride.
Prediction: Man United 2-2 West Ham
