Sunday’s efficient 2-0 win over Montpellier HSC saw OGC Nice retake their place on the podium in Ligue 1. Franck Haise’s side are on a hot run of form and in the last nine games, only runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain have taken more points than Le Gym.
Just three points off second-place Olympique de Marseille, Nice are in the running for qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Having qualified for this season’s UEFA Europa League thanks to a fifth-place finish last season, the objective this season was to ensure qualification once again for some form of European football.
However, can Nice now be more ambitious and fix a top-four finish, synonymous with Champions League qualification (three automatic spots and one qualification spot)? “The club’s objective is European football,” said Haise in a post-match press conference, attended by Get French Football News when asked specifically about Champions League football next season.
He added, “There are three (European competitions). We aren’t the only ones with European objectives. Some really need to make the Champions League. We would simply be happy to be there.”
