In his press conference today, Xabi Alonso has announced that he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.

On his decision, Alonso said:

“I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, my players and staff, all the club’s employees, and, last but not least, the fantastic fans. Our success was the result of an outstanding team performance, This club, which has placed extraordinary trust in me, thoroughly deserves to win the German championship for the first time. My thanks and affection go out to everyone who helped make this triumph a reality, including the cup victory in Berlin. Bayer 04 is ready for the future. This positive trajectory will continue, and I will follow it with interest.”

It is widely expected and reported that Alonso will leave to take charge of his former side, Real Madrid. The Spanish side are set to announce they will part ways with current head coach Carlo Ancelotti after the El Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday. kicker reports that Real Madrid will have to pay around €10-15m to bring Alonso to the Bernabeu.

Since joining Leverkusen in 2022, Alonso has transformed a team regularly dubbed as ‘Neverkusen’ into one of the best teams in Germany and, most importantly, Bundesliga winners. This season, Leverkusen never really looked like they could catch Bayern as they continued to drop points against teams that last season, they would have beaten.

Leverkusen are expected to shake up their squad in the summer, and will now also look to make a change in the dugout with former Barcelona midfielder and a former teammate of Alonso in Cesc Fabregas, being the current preferred candidate to replace Alonso.

The only piece of the puzzle missing is the future of Florian Wirtz and whether he stays at Leverkusen for another season or leaves for Manchester City, Bayern Munich, or follows Alonso to Real Madrid.
