Union Berlin have announced the signing of David Datro Fofana on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

With discussions becoming significantly advanced between Union and Chelsea over the past few days, Die Eisernen have finally landed their target. However, there is no option for Union to permanently keep the 20-year-old beyond this season.

“Union have developed extremely strongly in the last few years and it excites me a lot to be a part of this in the coming season,” commented Fofana on his move to Berlin. “The club has made a long and hard effort to find me and now I want to repay that with good performances.”

“David’s speed and his flexible offensive qualities are highly interesting for us,” said Union’s managing director of men’s professional football, Oliver Ruhnert, on the loan deal. “We want another goal-scoring player who will give our attacking game additional impetus.”

Fofana had only recently moved to London in January but had struggled to find game time in the Premier League, being limited to just 68 minutes over the course of three league games. However, the Ivorian international will now get the chance to impress in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League with Union, who have looked to strengthen their attack for the upcoming campaign.

Die Eisernen have already signed centre-forward Mikkel Kaufmann from FC Copenhagen for €2.7m, while also permanently signing Diogo Leite from Porto for €7.5m. A first foray into the Champions League will be an unforgettable experience for Union, and for Fofana, it could be an ideal way to establish himself as one of Europe’s most exciting talents.
