Official: UEFA rule San Siro out of hosting 2027 Champions League final – the reason | OneFootball

UEFA have confirmed that San Siro will not be considered as a candidate to host the 2027 Champions League final, which could have implications regarding the future of the stadium.

As Calciomercato.com report, UEFA have decided to exclude Milan as a venue for the 2027 UCL final. The decision had been in the air for some time, now the official confirmation has arrived given they have to choose the definitive venue by mid-2025.

The reason? The Council of Milan was unable to guarantee that the San Siro stadium and the surrounding areas would not be affected by renovation work during the period of the final in question, a scenario that is also linked to the moves of Inter and Milan on the stadium issue.

“As the Municipality of Milan could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and the surrounding areas would not be affected by renovation works during the time of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to award the final to Milan and to reopen the bid process to nominate a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025,” the statement reads.

Initially, the assignment of the 2027 Champions League final to Milan seemed automatic because UEFA had only received two applications to host the 2026 and 2027 finals: Milan and Budapest. Then, in recent weeks the governing body gave the 2026 final to the capital of Hungary, choosing instead San Siro for 2027, but with an asterisk.

The note published by UEFA on May 22nd in fact stated: “Decision suspended until September, on condition that the FIGC provides information on the renovation projects of the San Siro stadium in Milan.”

In particular, the FIGC was waiting for the Council of Milan on the front of the plans of Inter and Milan regarding the future of the San Siro. After the ‘no’ to the plan presented by WeBuild to renovate the stadium, there are no other certainties about the future. This led UEFA to look for other venues.
