Today (Thursday 13 January), the club released a training gallery featuring the Newcastle United players.

The images released, showing Newcastle United players training ahead of Saturday’s match against Watford.

A bit of insight into who may and may not be available for this relegation six pointer.

Amongst the text that went with Thursday’s photo gallery, Newcastle United included:

‘New signing Chris Wood trained with his new team-mates on Thursday after his arrival from Burnley was confirmed in the morning.

The New Zealand international could make his Magpies debut against Watford on Saturday, while fellow January recruit Kieran Trippier is also set to make his Premier League bow for United against the Hornets.

Matty Longstaff has returned from a loan spell with Aberdeen, while Eddie Howe has seen a handful of players return from Covid-19 and injury over the last couple of weeks, and club photographer Serena Taylor brought nufc.co.uk this gallery from the Newcastle United Training Centre.’

The photos published by on Thursday afternoon featured the following 20 players from what we could see:

Miguel Almiron, Elliot Anderson, Paul Dummett, Ryan Fraser, Mark Gillespie, Jeff Hendrick, Joelinton, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis, Matty Longstaff,  Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy,  Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin, Fabian Schar, Jonjo Shelvey, Kieran Trippier, Joe Willock, Chris Wood

In total, I make it 29 Newcastle United players who could have been included in the training images, these nine the ones we couldn’t see:

Karl Darlow, Ciaran Clark, Martin Dubravka, Federico Fernandez, Dwight Gayle, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson, Freddie Woodman

We know that Hayden and Wilson are definitely out through injury, whilst Fernandez wasn’t expected back until February at the earliest either.

So that leaves Clark, Darlow, Dubravka, Gayle, Sean Longstaff and Woodman also with question marks.

Three of the six being keepers, with Mark Gillespie the only NUFC first team squad goalkeeper who could be seen in the photos. However, none of the younger keepers were showing in the image gallery filling in either, so a decent chance that one or more of Darlow, Dubravka and Woodman were simply missed off the gallery but were at training. Hopefully.

A couple of observations regarding those that could be seen training.

Javier Manquillo was training today but is suspended on Saturday after picking up five yellow cards.

Meanwhile, Paul Dummett hasn’t played any first team football these past eight months and whilst he was on the bench against Cambridge, it remains to be seen as to whether he is in contention for the starting eleven.

Also on the left side of defence, Jamal Lewis hasn’t played for over four weeks after picking up an injury, so whether he is fit enough to be considered for a start, remains to be seen.

Obviously a massive move forward that the NUFC owners have brought Trippier and Wood into the squad, in time for them to be available for this first Premier League NUFC match since the transfer window opened.
