Bundesliga powerhouse RB Leipzig confirmed Elif Elmas’ switch to Serie A underachievers Torino on loan with an option to buy. Indeed, the German club issued a statement on Friday to announce the agreement.
“We wish Eljif every success in Turin,” sporting director Marcel Schafer noted in the official press release. “The loan is currently the best solution for everyone. Eljif will get the opportunity to gain a lot of playing practice in a league he knows well.“
Leipzig revealed Elmas’ move to Torino on the same day they secured Xavi Simons’ permanent arrival from Paris Saint-Germain. Therefore, the North Macedonia international returns to Serie A after only a year, having previously worn the Napoli jersey.
Elmas swapped Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for the Red Bull Arena last January. Leipzig parted with around €23 million to capture his signature, handing him a lengthy four-and-a-half-year contract. However, after failing to live up to expectations, he will join Torino, hoping to get his career back on track.
Moreover, Leipzig could lose money on Elmas’ transfer. It’s said Torino will have a purchase option set at €18m. If the skilled midfielder can regain his form, he’d be a massive coup for Paolo Vanoli’s mid-table strugglers.
Torino have desperately lacked creativity in the midfield this season, as witnessed by their disappointing 23-goal tally. That’s barely a goal per game, highlighting the need for a new playmaker.
