Sunderland centre-back Timothée Pembélé (21) has joined Ligue 1 side Le Havre for a season-long loan move, both clubs have announced. The versatile defender joined Sunderland AFC from Paris Saint-Germain last year. The PSG Academy graduate only made eight senior appearances since moving to the Stadium of Light. Pembélé remains tied with the Blacks Cats over a long-term contract set to expire in 2028.
The 21-year-old has made a total of 37 appearances in Ligue 1, which included a loan move to Bordeaux during which he played 28 times, scoring three goals, and providing one assist from right-back. “Although he hasn’t yet managed to force his way into the team, he is now fully fit and has trained consistently”, Sunderland Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said. “The next step is for him to play regularly in a competitive senior environment, and we believe this move will allow him to do that before returning to Sunderland next summer.”
