Sevilla have officially completed the signing of 22-year-old forward Alejandro “Alex” Costa from SD Ponferradina.

The young attacker has put pen to paper on a three-year contract and will initially join Sevilla Atletico, the club’s reserve side.

“Alejandro Costa Quijano (Madrid, 12/01/2003) is a new Sevilla Atlético player.

“The forward, who has signed a three-year contract, arrives from SD Ponferradina, where he has played 33 matches, scoring 10 goals and providing 2 assists in the First Federation and SM el Rey Cups,” the La Liga club confirmed in an official statement.

Costa’s arrival is seen as a strong addition to Sevilla’s youth project, with the forward already showing great promise during his time at Ponferradina.

Barcelona tried late to hijack the deal

While the deal between Sevilla and Ponferradina was nearing completion, a surprising twist unfolded in the final hours.

Barcelona reportedly made a late attempt to hijack the transfer. Sources suggest that earlier this week, the Catalan club contacted Ponferradina to express interest in Costa, just as the final details of his move to Sevilla were being wrapped up.

The sudden interest from Barcelona forced Costa to take a step back and re-evaluate his options. With some paperwork still pending, there was just enough time for Barça to make a last-minute push.

However, despite the unexpected turn, Costa ultimately remained loyal to his initial decision. People close to the player insisted he was fully committed to joining Sevilla, and the deal has now been made official.

Sevilla will be pleased to have secured the young forward’s services amid late competition. Costa will now look to make his mark at Sevilla Atletico, with hopes of eventually stepping up to the first team.
