Schalke have announced that head coach Kees van Wonderen will leave the club at the end of the season, after the Dutch head coach previously stated he would leave.
After Schalke’s 2-2 draw with Hamburg at the weekend, head coach van Wonderen announced he would leave the club at the end of the season. This blindsided Schalke, despite rumours of the Dutch’s departure in the summer for the past few weeks.
This has then set off a chain reaction across the 2.Bundesliga. On what type of coach Schalke will hire, Matthias Tillmann said:
“The new coach should have a recognisable style that fits Schalke 04’s playing philosophy. In short: We want to play forward boldly and purposefully with the ball, and work intensively and emotionally without it – especially in our VELTINS Arena. Naturally, aspects such as team leadership also play an important role in the selection of the coach. We want to decide quickly, but with the necessary care. We will take the time needed to make the best possible decision.”
The coach that Schalke are currently linked to is Kaiserslautern’s former head coach, Markus Anfang. Last night (Tuesday), die Rote Teuful sacked Anfang as the club was seemingly not pushing enough for promotion; they are currently three points off the play-off spot.
die Königsblau’s new sporting director Frank Baumann, who will take over officially in the summer, previously worked with Anfang at Werder Bremen before the latter resigned due to forging a COVID-19 vaccination certificate.
Schalke are currently 13th in the second division, 10 points off the relegation playoff spot, so they are not yet mathematically safe from the drop.
