The length of his contract is unknown as it is common for contract details to be left undisclosed at Freiburg.

On his contract extension, Lienhart said: “SC Freiburg has become my football home in recent years. I am very proud of the development that I have taken as a player, but also all of us as a team. This story is not over yet. I am very pleased to continue to be part of this group in the future and to fully attack again next season.”

Sports director Klemens Hartenbach also commented on the extension: “Philipp is a fixed pillar in our team. It fits both athletically and humanly. Due to his high quality and intelligence, he can fill any position in our different defensive formations. We are very pleased that we can continue on our journey together.”

The extension for Lienhart now all but rules out a potential move in the summer. His previous contract had a release clause of €15m and if they were unable to extend his contract they would of sold him in the summer to avoid losing him in 2024 on a free transfer.

Lienhart joined Freiburg in 2018 from Real Madrid for €2.00m. The 26-year-old has gone on to make 167 appearances for Freiburg helping the team qualify for the Europa League in the past two seasons while also reaching the DFB Pokal final in 2022.
