After four years in Marseille, Pape Gueye (25) has officially joined LaLiga side Villarreal upon the expiry of his contract with the Ligue 1 outfit.
Arriving with high expectations back in 2020, Gueye took part in 115 games across four seasons with Marseille. The midfielder failed to live up to the expectations set for him upon his arrival and has suffered from physical issues and a four-month ban due to his aborted transfer to Watford. Loaned out to Sevilla FC in the second half of the 2022-2023 season, the Senegalese international is set for another experience in Spain.
After having refused approaches from Ligue 1 outfits Lyon, Stade Rennais, and AS Monaco, Pape Gueye has decided to set his future in Spain. Villarreal, who finished 8th last season, sealed a four-year deal for the Senegalese midfielder. He will be coached by former Marseille manager Marcelino, whose tenure came to an end after just two months in charge last season.
