The NUFC Head Coach speaking ahead of this match against West Ham.

A match that of course comes only six days before Liverpool v Newcastle in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.

On Monday, a Newcastle United win could potentially take Eddie Howe’s side back into a Champions League place (top five), even a possibility of going level on points with four place Man City if they lose at Forest.

Pointers as to availability for this West Ham match and beyond.

Official Newcastle United injury update from Eddie Howe ahead of West Ham on Monday – 7 March 2025:

Eddie Howe on Sven Botman

Eddie Howe has confirmed this morning that Sven Botman is having surgery. The defender is having the surgery to clear fluid from his knee (the other one, not the knee with the ACL which kept him out for ten months).

The Head Coach says that the expectation is that Sven Botman will be back in around eight weeks.

So it is hoped and expected he will be able to play again this season.

If you look at the remaining NUFC match schedule below, if able to play in eight weeks time, that would realistically mean he could play in the four Premier League games in May.

Eddie Howe:

“Sven, we have been trying to get him back to full fitness, he was very close to the Brighton game but the day before he felt something again in his knee. This week he has had the same discomfort so it looks like he will have to have an operation.

He needs a small operation to clear out some fluid and then he should be fine again. We hope he should be back in about eight weeks.”

(***Fair to say I think that this is very much a good news/bad news update. A media exclusive had already revealed that Sven Botman would have surgery BUT great to hear this isn’t on the scale of his ACL issue on the other knee, with hopes instead of a return to playing this season in May)

Eddie Howe on Lewis Hall:

“Really disappointed for Lewis, we are devastated for him, he had so much to look forward to. He had the cup final and then internationals coming up, he was in really good form. It is a big blow for him and for us.”

As for Jamaal Lascelles, Eddie Howe revealed ahead of the Forest match that the defender was out on the grass working with the physios. However, it will be towards the end of the season before he could potentially return to action.

So for the West Ham match (and Liverpool cup final…), Newcastle United definitely without Hall, Gordon, Lascelles and Botman.
