Nemanja Matic has left Roma after just one season. Late this evening, the Serbian joined officially Rennes on a long-term contract until 2025 with an option for an additional season.
The French side agreed to pay a transfer fee worth €3 million for the midfielder, who originally moved to the Giallorossi on a free transfer in July 2022.
In an official statement, Rennes executive Florian Maurice revealed talks with Matic had been ongoing for over a month.
“I’m really happy to be welcoming Nemanja into our squad. His profile is what we were looking for in terms of supporting the team’s development,” Maurice told the club’s official website.
“He’s played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and his level of experience is incredible. Nemanja is a complete, intelligent midfielder who is gifted with a strong tactical understanding and is capable of dictating the tempo and the rhythm of a game.”
Adding, “As a tall player, he’ll also be important in the air. Much like Steve Mandanda, he’s a humble but ambitious person who will be able to say the right things to our young players.”
“We’ve been talking to him for more than a month now, and he knows about the club thanks to its visibility on the European stage and its performances in Ligue 1. His arrival also confirms the appeal of Rennes on the international stage.”
The club also published a brief statement from Matic, “I feel welcome here and appreciate the warm reception I received,” he said.
“From the very first discussions, I really liked the project that was laid out and explained to me. I know there’s many talented players in the squad—I can’t wait to get started.”
