Monza have officially confirmed the signing of highly-rated teenager Matija Popovic on a short-term contract until the end of the 2023-24 season, at which point he is expected to join Napoli in a multi-year deal.
Popovic has been a free agent after allowing his contract to run down at Partizan Belgrade in his native Serbia.
The 18-year-old has been one of the mysteries of the January transfer window in Serie A, as he had been close to joining Milan at the beginning of the month, only for his San Siro move to collapse over intermediary fees.
Juventus had also registered an interest in signing the 18-year-old at various stages over the winter period.
Then, Napoli jumped on the situation and had wanted to send Popovic to Frosinone for regular Serie A minutes before the end of the season. However, Frosinone did not have any available slots for non-EU players in their squads, and so, that move collapsed as well.
Napoli have been able to reach an agreement with Monza, who will have Popovic at their disposal for the remaining 2023-24 matches, before leaving again to join Napoli, technically on a free transfer.
from the Partenopei earlier on Thursday morning.
