RB Leipzig have today announced the contract extension of French defender Mohamed Simakan on a deal until 2027. The Frenchman joined the Bundesliga club in 2021 for €18m.

“The club and the city have quickly become my second home and I’m quite simply delighted to be here,” said Simakan.

Max Eberl also commented on the extension, as it is his first major action as Leipzig’s new sporting director. Eberl said: “Mo is a key player in our team and really indefinites with RB Leipzig and all the people connected with the club. We are delighted that we have been able to extend his contract ahead of time.”

Simakan has played 60 games for Leipzig since joining from Strasbourg in 2021, originally signed due to the outgoing of Dayot Upamecano to Bayern Munich. He has yet to solidify himself in his preferred centre-back position but has found himself playing at right-back at times this season. However, injuries just before the break meant he missed the last game of the season.

After a poor start to the season, Leipzig finds themselves third. During the first half of the season, RBL sacked Domenico Tedesco after they found themself in the bottom half of the table before then replacing him with Marco Rose which saw them rise to their current position. They also brought in Max Eberl as the new sporting director after he left Borussia Mönchengladbach.
