Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced that they have completed the signing of Maximilian Wöber from Leeds United on a season-long loan.

Sky Germany has previously reported that the 25-year-old’s loan is likely to not contain a buy option and the loan fee for Wöber will be around €500k.

On his move to Gladbach, Wöber said: “Borussia is an absolute traditional club that has always been very interesting for me and which I liked to watch, also because many Austrians played here. It is an extremely attractive task that I am very much looking forward to.”

Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus also commented on the arrival of Wöber: “The experience that Max has gained from his previous clubs, but also from the Austrian national team at the highest level, will be good for our young team. He is a player who is not afraid to take responsibility. As a left foot, it is also a real gain in tactical terms and can be used both in central defence, but also on the left side.”

Wöber only joined Leeds in January from Red Bull Salzburg for €12m but in his 16 appereances for the side he was unable to help rescue them from relegation to the Championship. The Austrian is likely to replace Nico Elvedi in the Gladbach defence as the Swiss international is likely to join Wolves in the Premier League once they can agree on a fee with Gladbach.

The signing of Wöber is Gladbach’s eigtht transfer of the window as the club have already signed Julian Weigl (Benfica), Lukas Ullrich (Hertha Berlin), Grant-Leon Ranos (Bayern Munich), Robin Hack (Arminia Bielefeld), Fabio Chiarodia (Werder Bremen), Franck Honorat (Stade Brest) and Tomas Cvancara (Sparta Prague).
