AC Milan have announced the centre-back Mattia Caldara will be out of action for some time after he had an operation on his ankle.

Caldara returned from a loan spell with Spezia during the summer after their relegation to Serie A and he was strongly expected to leave Milan on a permanent basis, but no interest really materialised and so he stayed.

Then, Milan decided to reinstate Caldara in the squad by inserting him in the list of 25 players available in Serie A and in the Champions League squad list. The defender is in fact one of the four ‘homegrown’ players, i.e. he came through an Italian academy.

Stefano Pioli revealed that he has an ankle problem, and now the club have confirmed Caldara underwent an operation on his right ankle today, performed by Dr Giacomo Zanon under the supervision of Club doctor Lucio Genesio.

The arthroscopic surgery was a complete success but his recovery timeframe is estimated to be around three months.
