This afternoon both Arsenal and OM officially announced midfielder Matteo Guendouzi’s move to Olympique de Marseille at the end of last season’s loan spell – with the Olympian club choosing to exercise their option to buy the player with a new contract at the club will last until June 2025.

Last season Guendouzi became an integral part Marseille’s 2nd place finish, making 56 appearances in all competitions during a campaign which included a deep foray into the Europa Conference League to the semi-final stage – missing out to Dutch side Feyenoord. The Poissy-born midfielder also earned his first call-up from Didier Deschamps for France this season in November, and has since appeared 6 times for Les Bleus and scored 1 goal on the international stage.

Guendouzi started his career in PSG’s academy, before joining Lorient in 2014 – and then Arsenal in 2018. In his time in the Premier League, Guendouzi managed 57 appearances and scored two goals for the Gunners – after which the 23-year old spent the 2020/21 season out on loan to Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.

The news comes after Marseille also announced this afternoon that they have agreed with manager Jorge Sampaoli to terminate the Argentine’s contract, just one year after he arrived at the club. Club president Pablo Longoria is set to speak at a press conference later on Friday afternoon to discuss the news, as the club describes the start of a “new cycle” in its announcement, which will nevertheless provide “continuity” with the current sporting project.
