Olympique de Marseille have officially confirmed the departure of Gennaro Gattuso as manager.

In a short statement, Marseille expressed that the club had “ended its collaboration” with the manager and it would “like to thank Gennaro and all of his staff for the flawless investment and great professionalism they have shown on a daily basis and wish them good luck for the future.”

The news had been expected following reports that the Marseille hierarchy had lost confidence in Gattuso after a defeat to Stade Brestois over the weekend. It was a loss that extended the club’s winless run across all competitions to seven games and leaves an eight-point gap between the club and the European places.

Since the start of the year, Gattuso has only managed one victory with Marseille, a narrow win over fifth-tier side US Thionville Lusitanos in the Coupe de France.

Jean-Louis Gasset could replace Gattuso

It has been rumoured that Marseille will look to replace Gattuso with Jean-Louis Gasset until the end of the season, with the former Côte d’Ivoire coach expected to take over the side ahead of their Europa League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday.

Gasset became recently available after he quit the Côte d’Ivoire national team midway through the Africa Cup of Nations. The Elephants without Gasset at the helm then went on to win the tournament.
