Olympique de Marseille have confirmed that Pau López (30) has left the club on loan to join Mexican side Deportivo Toluca. His new club will have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season for an undisclosed fee.

López had been Marseille’s starting goalkeeper last season but had soon found that he no longer had a future in La Provence, particularly with the arrival of Gerónimo Rulli from Ajax. He was sent out on loan to Girona this season but found game time limited at his hometown club.

Pau López was close to returning to France

He had been close to returning to Ligue 1 this winter when RC Lens were searching for a new goalkeeper and the club had even announced him as a new signing. However, that deal collapsed when it became apparent that Girona would only cancel his loan until after the Champions League league phase had finished.
